Adding Schema

Schema is website code that helps Google (and other search engines) understand the relationship between your website and your location in the real world.

Before Getting Started

  • Don't get intimidated if you don't know anything about website code. All you need to do is fill in the blanks :)

  • Make sure you enter your information exactly as you have entered it on your Google Business Profile (i.e. business name, address, phone number).

  • If you hide your address on your listing, I recommend adding this code to your website. It will build location relevance because Google still sees your address (even though it is hidden from the public).

The Process

Step 1: Open the Schema generator

Click here to visit the Schema generator.

The link opens in a new tab so you won't lose this page.

Step 2: Select the correct type

In the drop-down, select "Local Business."

You'll need to scroll down within the drop-down to see it:

Step 3: Select your business type

In the first drop-down, select the most relevant type to your business.

If you can't find a good match, select "LocalBusiness".

Step 4: Select a more specific business category.

Once you have selected your business type, you may have the ability to select a more specific business category in the next drop-down.

Many categories do not provide this option, so don't worry if it is unavailable to you.

Step 5: Enter your key business information

Enter your business information exactly as it appears on your Google Business Profile.

This includes:

  • Business Name

  • URL

  • Phone Number

  • Address

Note: The @id field should be the URL for your homepage.

Step 6: Generate your geo coordinates

Click the Geo Coordinates button.

Your latitude and longitude will be retrieved automatically.

Step 7: Copy your image URL

This field allows you to choose an image on your website that best represents your business.

Go to your website and copy the image URL.

You can do this by:

  • Right-clicking on the image

  • Clicking "copy image address" from the menu that appears

Step 8: Select opening hours

Use the drop-down to select which days your business is open.

Enter the hours you are open in the field that appears. Your hours should be entered in the 24-hour format.

Example: If your hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, they would be entered as "09:00" and "17:00".

If you have different sets of opening hours (i.e., during the weekends), you can click the "Add Opening Hours" button to add another row.

Step 9: Add your social profiles

Select the social profiles your business has using the drop-down.

Enter the URLs in their respective fields.

Step 10: Copy the code

Click the copy button on the top right-hand side of the page. It is above the auto-generated code.

Paste and save the code as a text file (.txt) using a program like Notepad.

Step 11: Add the code to your homepage

If you have someone that manages your website, then you should be able to send this code to them.

The code should be added to the <head> section of the page.

If you use WordPress (one of the most popular website platforms), you can follow the instructions on this page.
