What is a Google website?

Updated: Oct 3

A "Google website" typically refers to a website created using Google's website building and hosting service called "Google Sites." Google Sites is a simple and user-friendly platform that allows individuals and businesses to create websites without the need for advanced technical skills. Here are some key features and aspects of Google Sites:

  1. Template-Based Design:

  2. Google Sites offers various templates to choose from, making it easy for users to create a website quickly. These templates cover a range of purposes, from personal portfolios to collaborative team sites.

  3. Drag-and-Drop Interface:

  4. The platform employs a drag-and-drop interface, allowing users to add text, images, videos, and other elements to their site effortlessly. This makes it accessible for individuals who may not have coding or web design experience.

  5. Integration with Google Workspace:

  6. Google Sites seamlessly integrates with other Google Workspace tools, such as Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Calendar. This makes it convenient for users who rely on these services for collaboration and document management.

  7. Collaborative Editing:

  8. Multiple users can collaborate on a Google Site in real-time. This feature is particularly useful for teams working on projects or organizations that need a shared online space.

  9. Mobile-Friendly Design:

  10. Google Sites automatically ensures that the websites created are mobile-friendly, optimizing the user experience for visitors on various devices, including smartphones and tablets.

  11. Free Hosting:

  12. Google Sites provides free hosting for the websites created on its platform. This means users don't have to worry about finding external hosting services or managing server configurations.

  13. Custom Domain Mapping:

  14. While the free version of Google Sites comes with a "sites.google.com" domain, users can purchase and map a custom domain to their Google Site for a more professional appearance.

  15. Security and Permissions:

  16. Google Sites inherits security features from the broader Google Workspace, ensuring a secure environment for your website. Users can also set permissions to control who can view or edit the content.

Google Sites is an excellent option for individuals and small businesses looking to create a simple website quickly and without the complexities associated with traditional web development. However, for more advanced and feature-rich websites, other web development platforms or content management systems may be more suitable.

2024 Update: Google has announced that it will stop supporting websites created through Google Business Profiles by March 2024, affecting over 22 million websites created through the service.

After March 2024, customers who visit your website will be redirected to your Business Profile, but this redirect will only work until June 10th, 2024. After June 10th, the redirect will no longer work, and your link will be dead.
